At the coaching inn in Penrith, Arlan Rapp sat nursing his ale, talking across the table from a local man. He’d asked the man if he’d seen a gentleman and lady passing through.

The man rubbed his chin. “A well-looking woman?”

Rapp nodded.

“Saw a fellow in Clifton travelling on horseback with a well-looking woman.” He took a gulp of ale. “The man was no gentleman, though. Tall fellow. Just a man and wife travelling, seemed like.”

“On horseback, you say?” Rapp lifted his eyebrows.

“That is so.”

Rapp drummed his fingers on the table.

Several towns before someone had spoken of a tall man and a pretty woman. No horses had been mentioned, however. Horses explained a great deal.

In Liverpool Rapp had discovered that the elusive Mr and Mrs Lear had fled the Moor’s Head and stayed at a different inn. They had made enquiries about ships to Glasgow, but had not booked passage. Even though the Viscountess and her companion had purchased seats on the public coach to Kendal, they had not used them.

Rapp knew deep in his gut that the Viscountess was headed to Scotland. He had to follow that belief. Trust that he would find her.

He lifted his tankard to his lips.

They were on horseback.

He’d assumed they had hired a private coach. He’d been wrong, but now at least he was on their trail. If he did not find the Viscountess on the road, he would certainly locate her in Parronley. He would pen another letter to Wexin, appraising him of his progress. He’d sent a letter from Liverpool, but this time he could be even more confident he would apprehend her.

He gazed out of the window where the rain continued unabated. Wherever they were at the moment, they would not travel further this night. Suddenly the bed in the room he’d let at the inn sounded very appealing.

He stood and threw some coins on the table. “I thank you for your information and bid you goodnight. Have more refreshment on me.”
